Southwest Detroit, Michigan — With more than three decades of life in Michigan, Mayte Penman has become one of the most committed voices supporting and advocating for Latino entrepreneurs in Southwest Detroit. Her story — shaped by migration, resilience, and community service — was recently shared on the podcast Opina con Liliana Ospina by Latinos en Michigan USA.
Originally from Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, Mayte came to the United States intending to study English for a short time. However, life led her to settle permanently in Michigan, raise a family, and face profound personal challenges, including becoming a widow in 2017. Since then, she has balanced her role as a mother with an intense commitment to community work focused on helping other Latinos move forward.
With a degree in Psychology, Mayte found community work to be a natural extension of her vocation. For 16 years, she worked with the Head Start program, guiding immigrant families in defining personal and educational goals. Later, her work expanded to collaborating with business owners along the Bagley and Vernor corridors, helping them identify needs, strengthen their businesses, and connect with key resources.
Her experience continued with organizations such as Southwest Solutions and TechTown Detroit, where she focused on evaluating small businesses, helping entrepreneurs set goals for their projects, and tracking their progress. While she did not directly provide every service, Mayte became a bridge between entrepreneurs and specialists in areas such as marketing, accounting, web development, and the strategic use of social media.
She has also played a key role in collaborative initiatives such as Asesorías and the Southwest Detroit Small Business Service Providers group — a network of nonprofit organizations that offers free guidance to local business owners. This collective effort, now supported by the New Economy Initiative (NEI), continues to bring together multiple entities with a shared goal: strengthening the local economy through Latino entrepreneurship.
During the interview, Mayte emphasized the importance of mutual responsibility between advisors and entrepreneurs, honesty in mentorship, and the value of sharing information. “The support goes both ways,” she noted, highlighting that community growth happens when knowledge circulates and is placed in service of others.
Her message to Hispanic entrepreneurs in Southwest Detroit was clear: do not become discouraged, ask questions, seek support, and take advantage of available resources. “There are many organizations here willing to help. Don’t feel intimidated. If you have a question, no matter how small, ask it,” she said.

Southwest Detroit, Michigan. — Con más de tres décadas de vida en Michigan, Mayte Penman se ha convertido en una de las voces más comprometidas en la defensa y acompañamiento de los emprendedores latinos en Southwest Detroit. Su historia, marcada por la migración, la resiliencia y el servicio comunitario, fue compartida recientemente en el pódcast Opina con Liliana Ospina, de Latinos en Michigan USA.
Originaria de Torreón, Coahuila, México, Mayte llegó a Estados Unidos con la intención de estudiar inglés por un corto periodo. Sin embargo, la vida la llevó a establecerse definitivamente en Michigan, formar una familia y enfrentar retos personales profundos, como la viudez en 2017. Desde entonces, ha combinado su rol como madre con una intensa labor comunitaria enfocada en apoyar a otros latinos a salir adelante.
Graduada en Psicología, Mayte encontró en el trabajo comunitario una extensión natural de su vocación. Durante 16 años laboró en el programa Head Start, donde acompañó a familias inmigrantes en la definición de metas personales y educativas. Posteriormente, su trabajo la llevó a colaborar con comerciantes del corredor de Bagley y Vernor, ayudándolos a identificar necesidades, fortalecer sus negocios y conectarse con recursos clave.
Su experiencia continuó en organizaciones como Southwest Solutions y TechTown Detroit, donde se ha enfocado en la evaluación de pequeños negocios, el establecimiento de metas para emprendedores y sus proyectos y el seguimiento de su progreso. Aunque no realizaba directamente todos los servicios, Mayte se convirtió en un puente entre los emprendedores y especialistas en áreas como mercadotecnia, contabilidad, desarrollo web y uso estratégico de redes sociales.

Finalmente, su mensaje para los emprendedores hispanos de Southwest Detroit fue claro: no desanimarse, preguntar, buscar apoyo y aprovechar los recursos disponibles. “Aquí hay muchas organizaciones dispuestas a ayudar. No se sientan intimidados. Si tienen una pregunta, por pequeña que sea, háganla”, expresó.
