DETROIT, Michigan — Hace unos días, SHPE Detroit se realizó la 5ª Feria Universitaria en Western International High School, reuniendo a ingenieros hispanos y profesionales de STEM comprometidos en guiar e inspirar a jóvenes interesados en carreras en ingeniería, matemáticas, tecnología y oficios especializados.
El evento logró convocar a 348 asistentes, incluyendo 118 estudiantes, 95 adultos, 92 voluntarios y 43 representantes de organizaciones. Más allá de las cifras, los organizadores destacaron que la jornada generó conversaciones significativas, motivación y acceso a recursos clave para el desarrollo académico y profesional de los participantes.
De acuerdo con Cyndi Cruz-Rodríguez, ingeniera de General Motors, este tipo de iniciativas son fundamentales para conectar a la comunidad con oportunidades educativas.
“Es muy importante darles oportunidades a los estudiantes lo más posible, porque la información es poder”, señaló.
Por su parte, Maridy Mazaira, presidente de SHPE Detroit, explicó que el evento fue el resultado de meses de planificación y el apoyo de numerosos voluntarios.
“Después de meses de trabajo, contamos con decenas de espacios con recursos gratuitos, incluyendo universidades, community colleges y programas de formación que ayudan a los estudiantes a seguir adelante”, comentó.
La importancia de involucrar a toda la familia también fue un punto clave. Raquel Estrada, vicepresidente de SHPE Detroit, destacó que el acceso a la información en español facilita la comprensión y participación tanto de padres como de estudiantes.
“Queremos que los padres también tengan acceso a estos recursos y que este evento continúe realizándose cada año”, afirmó.
Para muchos profesionales que asistieron al evento, la feria representó mucho más que orientación académica: es una oportunidad para construir comunidad. Pedro Garcia subrayó la necesidad de crear redes de apoyo para inmigrantes.
“Aquí encontramos una comunidad donde todos quieren que tengas éxito”, expresó.
En la misma línea, Erick Vega, uno de los voluntarios, resaltó el valor de la representación.
“Ver a personas que comparten nuestras raíces, idioma y experiencias, logrando cosas importantes, es clave para inspirar a las nuevas generaciones”, dijo.
El compromiso de empresas también fue evidente. Ángel Porras, de Ford Motor Company, enfatizó la importancia de la colaboración.
“Necesitamos que más personas se involucren. Solo juntos podemos crecer como comunidad”, señaló.
La 5ª Feria Universitaria de SHPE Detroit reafirmó el impacto de crear espacios donde la educación, la representación y la comunidad se unen para abrir caminos hacia un futuro más prometedor para los jóvenes latinos en Michigan.
A través de iniciativas como esta, el mensaje es claro: las oportunidades existen, y la comunidad está lista para seguir creciendo, apoyando y formando a la próxima generación de líderes.

Engineers and STEM Leaders Inspire the Next Generation at SHPE Detroit’s 5th College Fair

DETROIT, Michigan — A few days ago, SHPE Detroit held its 5th College Fair at Western International High School, bringing together Hispanic engineers and STEM professionals committed to guiding and inspiring young students interested in careers in engineering, mathematics, technology, and skilled trades.
The event welcomed 348 attendees, including 118 students, 95 adults, 92 volunteers, and 43 representatives from organizations. Beyond the numbers, organizers emphasized that the event created meaningful conversations, motivation, and access to key resources for participants’ academic and professional development.
According to Cyndi Cruz-Rodríguez, an engineer at General Motors, initiatives like this are essential to connecting the community with educational opportunities.
“It’s very important to give students as many opportunities as possible, because information is power,” she said.
Meanwhile, Maridy Mazaira, president of SHPE Detroit, explained that the event was the result of months of planning and the support of numerous volunteers.
“After months of work, we had dozens of booths offering free resources, including universities, community colleges, and training programs that help students move forward,” she said.
The importance of involving the entire family was also highlighted. Raquel Estrada noted that access to information in Spanish helps both parents and students better understand and engage.
“We want parents to have access to these resources as well, and for this event to continue happening every year,” she said.
For many professionals who attended, the fair represented much more than academic guidance—it was an opportunity to build community. Pedro Garcia emphasized the need to create support networks for immigrants.
“Here we find a community where everyone wants you to succeed,” he said.
In the same spirit, Erick Vega highlighted the importance of representation.
“Seeing people who share our roots, language, and experiences achieving important things is key to inspiring the next generation,” he said.
Corporate engagement was also evident. Ángel Porras from Ford Motor Company stressed the importance of collaboration.
“We need more people to get involved. Only together can we grow as a community,” he said.
The 5th College Fair by SHPE Detroit reaffirmed the impact of creating spaces where education, representation, and community come together to open pathways toward a brighter future for Latino youth in Michigan.
Through initiatives like this, the message is clear: opportunities exist, and the community is ready to continue growing, supporting, and shaping the next generation of leaders.
