The streets of Southwest Detroit were filled with thousands of people enjoying the annual Cinco de Mayo festival, which celebrated its 61st anniversary this year.

One of the people who enjoyed the parade the most was Jesse J. Gonzales Sr., the community leader who was named Grand Marshal of the Cinco de Mayo Parade 2026, one of the most important cultural celebrations for the Latino community in Michigan.

It was a well-deserved tribute to a man who has worked for decades for the well-being of Southwest Detroit.

In an exclusive interview with Liliana Ospina Herbstreith from Latinos En Michigan USA, Gonzales reflected on his decades of community service, his deep love for Southwest Detroit, and the honor of being selected for this prestigious recognition.

Known by many residents as the “Mayor of Southwest Detroit,” Gonzales has dedicated years to bringing people together to solve neighborhood issues, improve public safety, and strengthen community relationships. Although he was born in Laredo, Texas, and raised in San Antonio, he moved to Detroit as a teenager in the 1960s and quickly developed a lifelong connection with Southwest Detroit and the Delray neighborhood.

During the interview, Gonzales shared stories about some of his earliest community efforts, including advocating for better lighting under dangerous viaducts, working closely with city officials, and helping residents connect directly with government departments to address neighborhood concerns.

“For me, it has always been about bringing people together,” Gonzales said. “One person alone cannot do much, but when people unite, we can accomplish great things.”

Gonzales also spoke about the spirit of unity that defines Southwest Detroit, especially during difficult moments such as major flooding events, when neighbors came together to support families in need with food, diapers, and emergency assistance. He also recognized the work of several community leaders and volunteers, including Laura Chavez, for helping organize relief efforts.

According to Gonzales, the strength of Southwest Detroit lies in its people, its relationships, and its culture.

“Southwest love — that’s what I always say,” Gonzales explained. “It’s not about hate. It’s about giving love.”

The veteran community leader described being named Grand Marshal as one of the greatest honors of his life. Despite facing health challenges, Gonzales said he remains committed to helping others and continues receiving calls from residents seeking guidance, support, and assistance.

“I still can’t believe it,” he said emotionally during the interview. “Being the Grand Marshal of Southwest Detroit means receiving so much love from the community.”

During the conversation, Gonzales also highlighted the rich culture of Southwest Detroit, praising its restaurants, bakeries, traditions, and strong neighborhood connections. He also emphasized the importance of kindness, respect, and supporting one another.

“Open your heart,” Gonzales expressed in his message to the community. “Say hello to people. Hold the door open for someone. Small acts of kindness mean a lot. Southwest love lives forever in each one of us.”

The Cinco de Mayo Parade 2026 brought together thousands of attendees in Southwest Detroit as the community united to celebrate culture, heritage, unity, and leadership.

Se trató de un merecido homenaje a un hombre que ha trabajado durante décadas por el bienestar de Southwest Detroit.

En una entrevista exclusiva con Liliana Ospina Herbstreith de Latinos En Michigan USA, Gonzales reflexionó sobre sus décadas de servicio comunitario, su profundo amor por Southwest Detroit y el honor de haber sido seleccionado para este prestigioso reconocimiento.

Conocido por muchos residentes como el “Alcalde de Southwest Detroit”, Gonzales ha dedicado años a unir a las personas para resolver problemas vecinales, mejorar la seguridad pública y fortalecer las relaciones comunitarias.
