Detroit, MI. — Latinos En Michigan USA was honored to attend the 2026 Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) Community Investment Breakfast, held at Corner Ballpark under this year’s inspiring theme, «New Beginnings: Rooted in Community, Rising in Opportunity.»
The annual event brought together hundreds of business owners, entrepreneurs, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and residents to celebrate the strength and resilience of Southwest Detroit while highlighting new opportunities for economic development, entrepreneurship, and neighborhood revitalization.
This year’s honorees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community:

🏆 Real Estate/Business Investment Award: Rodrigo Padilla
🏆 Community Investment Award: Frank Venegas and Sylvia Gucken
Luis Ali, President of AGI Construction and Chair of the SDBA Board of Directors, said the event reflected the organization’s commitment to collaboration.
«We invited our partners, funders, small businesses, community organizations, and nonprofits to come together and support this event. We had a great time, and we shared our vision for moving forward, with partnership becoming the new model of leadership.»
One of the most emotional moments of the morning came as Frank Venegas, recipient of the Community Investment Award, reflected on his lifelong connection to Southwest Detroit.
«The greatest thing about receiving this award is that just six blocks from here is the water tower where I grew up. My grandmother gets to see what I’m doing here, and I know she’s very proud. More than anything, it’s an incredible honor to be recognized by the community.»
Venegas also reaffirmed his company’s long-term commitment to the neighborhood.
«We’ve been here for 40 years, and we’re going to be here for another 40 years.»
Joel Padilla, of Taquería El Nacimiento, a family-owned Mexican restaurant that has served Southwest Detroit for 25 years, said the recognition belongs to the community as much as it does to his business.
«This award means a lot to us because we’re part of this community, and the community has always supported us. We truly appreciate the love and support we’ve received from the people of Detroit, especially here in Southwest Detroit.»
Maria Salinas, Executive Director of the Congress of Communities and recipient of the Champion Award, spoke about her lifelong commitment to serving the neighborhood where she was born and raised.
«I love Southwest Detroit. I was born and raised here, and my entire career has been dedicated to social justice and making sure residents receive the services they deserve. As a proud Latina, I will continue advocating for the people of Southwest Detroit.»
Before concluding the event, Frank Venegas shared an inspiring message for the next generation of Latino leaders:
«To the young people: stay committed. Find a mentor. But most importantly, be true to what you do.»
The Community Investment Breakfast continues to serve as one of Southwest Detroit’s premier events, celebrating the leaders, businesses, and organizations that are helping build a stronger and more vibrant community for future generations.

Detroit, MI. — Latinos En Michigan USA tuvo el honor de asistir al Community Investment Breakfast 2026 de la Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA), celebrado en Corner Ballpark bajo el inspirador lema de este año: «New Beginnings: Rooted in Community, Rising in Opportunity» (Nuevos comienzos: arraigados en la comunidad, impulsados por las oportunidades).
El evento anual reunió a cientos de empresarios, emprendedores, líderes comunitarios, organizaciones sin fines de lucro y residentes para celebrar la fortaleza y resiliencia del suroeste de Detroit, al tiempo que destacó nuevas oportunidades para el desarrollo económico, el emprendimiento y la revitalización de los vecindarios.
Durante la ceremonia se reconoció a personas que han realizado contribuciones extraordinarias a la comunidad:

Luis Ali, presidente de AGI Construction y presidente de la Junta Directiva de la Southwest Detroit Business Association, señaló que el evento reflejó el compromiso de la organización con la colaboración.
«Invitamos a nuestros socios, patrocinadores, pequeñas empresas, organizaciones comunitarias y organizaciones sin fines de lucro para que nos acompañaran y apoyaran este evento. Fue una gran jornada en la que compartimos nuestra visión de avanzar juntos, haciendo de las alianzas el nuevo modelo de liderazgo.»
Uno de los momentos más emotivos de la mañana ocurrió cuando Frank Venegas, ganador del Community Investment Award, recordó el profundo vínculo que ha mantenido toda su vida con Southwest Detroit.
«Lo más especial de recibir este reconocimiento es que, a solo seis cuadras de aquí, está la torre de agua junto a la que crecí. Mi abuela puede ver lo que estoy haciendo aquí y sé que estaría muy orgullosa. Más que nada, es un honor increíble ser reconocido por mi propia comunidad.»
Venegas también reafirmó el compromiso de su empresa con el desarrollo del vecindario.
«Hemos estado aquí durante 40 años y estaremos aquí por otros 40 años más.»
Por su parte, Joel Padilla, de Taquería El Nacimiento, un restaurante mexicano familiar que ha servido a la comunidad del suroeste de Detroit durante 25 años, afirmó que el reconocimiento pertenece tanto a su negocio como a la comunidad que los ha apoyado.
«Este premio significa mucho para nosotros porque somos parte de esta comunidad y la comunidad siempre nos ha apoyado. Agradecemos profundamente el cariño y respaldo que hemos recibido de la gente de Detroit, especialmente aquí, en Southwest Detroit.»
Maria Salinas, directora ejecutiva de Congress of Communities y ganadora del Champion Award, habló sobre su compromiso de toda la vida con el vecindario donde nació y creció.
«Amo Southwest Detroit. Nací y crecí aquí, y toda mi carrera ha estado dedicada a la justicia social y a garantizar que los residentes reciban los servicios que merecen. Como latina, seguiré defendiendo y trabajando por los residentes de Southwest Detroit.»
Antes de concluir el evento, Frank Venegas compartió un mensaje inspirador para las nuevas generaciones de líderes latinos:
«A los jóvenes les digo: manténganse comprometidos. Busquen un mentor. Pero, sobre todo, sean fieles a lo que hacen.»
El Community Investment Breakfast continúa consolidándose como uno de los eventos más importantes del suroeste de Detroit, reconociendo a los líderes, empresarios y organizaciones que trabajan día a día para construir una comunidad más fuerte, próspera y llena de oportunidades para las futuras generaciones.
